This is not a
comprehensive list of Hawaiian steel guitar links by any stretch of the
imagination. However, these are sufficient to get you started in
learning a little more about this wonderful instrument.
HAWAIIAN MUSIC LINKS The gold standard. They have something in every Hawaiian music category. Mele.com is a great way to get started compiling your Hawaiian music library. Another great site for Hawaiian music CDs as well as other things Hawaiian! This Australian site sells CDs of vintage Hawaiian recordings. Great stuff! Cumquat is a fantastic resource for anyone interested in researching the history of Hawaiian recordings. CD Baby is a great site. ANY musician can market his/her CDs through CD Baby. That said, if you search on the word "Hawaiian" you’re going to get a pretty eclectic bunch of CDs to choose from. I’ve never bought from the Hawaiian Music Store but they appear to have a huge selection of CDs.
HAWAIIAN GUITAR SITES Here are answers to virtually any question you might have regarding the Hawaiian steel guitar. One of my favorite sites. Hawaiian Steel Guitar Association I am a member of this fine organization. Lot’s of information regarding instruments, players, venues, etc. But for some real fun check out the music page with recordings submitted by members. John Ely is one of the most knowledgeable players around. His string gauge chart (organized by tunings) is famous amongst players.
HAWAIIAN STEEL GUITAR MAKERS Note: I'm not going to list exotic or exorbitantly-priced instruments... yet. Here's a couple of excellent "starter" models. I play one of these and I think they’re great. They’re now available in both 6 and 8 string configurations. Available now from either Elderly Instruments (see below) or Music123. Available in both 6 and 8 string configurations. The 6 string version can be purchased from MusiciansFriend (see below) as the RH-2. At $349.99 many recommend it as an excellent starter instrument.
WHERE YOU CAN BUY A LAP STEEL GUITAR Again, I'm not going to list dealers in exotic or exorbitantly-priced instruments. Here's a few places where you can get started for not very much money. Eventually you'll get hooked, then you'll be telling me where to get the good stuff! ... and, of course, there's always the 'Bay.
